The community of Greek Chest Physicians lost one of its distinguished members, the Associate Professor Dr. Constantinos Hadjistavrou, who served with dignity for many years in the 1st Dept of Respiratory Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, on the 5th July 2018. Most of us remember the smiling Costas, always ready to help and teach medical, thesis students, fellows, and junior doctors in training.

He had vast work experience in the field of respiratory medicine:

1. from 20 April 2017 Director of the 2nd Department of Pulmonary Medicine at the ERRICOS DYNAN Hospital Center.

2. from April 2000 to April 2017 Director of the 1st Pulmonary Clinic at Metropolitan Hospital N. Faliro, Attica.

Since 1998 served as Associate Professor, between 1990-1998 as Assistant Professor, 1986-1990 as Lecturer, 1981-1986 as Senior Registrar. Total length of service at the Respiratory Medicine Dpt of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School about twenty years. During 1979-1981 he worked as a research fellow in the Research Unit of Evangelismos Hospital. From 1978 to 1979 Director of the Pulmonary Dept of Lamia Hospital. He graduated as a young doctor from the Medical School of the University of Thessaloniki (1973). He acquired a Medical Doctorate of the Medical School of the University of Athens. He was trained in the Specialty of Respiratory medicine at the “Sotiria” Hospital and the Military Hospital for Respiratory diseases from 1973 to 1977. He was further speliazed in Occupational Medicine, at Edinburgh Institute of Occupational Diseases, Edinburgh City Hospital, Dundee University - Certificate in Industrial Health, in 1986.

Awards: For six consecutive academic years a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). Awards from the European Union for contributing to the health and safety of workers.

Publications: Doctoral thesis titled '' The corrected active time of the maximum expiratory spirometry ''. Textbook for the education of students '' Occupational lung diseases ''. Participation in the textbook "Internal Medicine" by Professor I. Hatzigiannis.

Scientific papers and publications in Greek and English exceed 250. For example, the study of “the acute and immediate effects of air pollution on young healthy adults” is translated into the international medical literature in English, Russian, German, Turkish, Arabic, Portuguese, and Chinese.

Supervision of college doctoral theses were on :

A.   Functional breath control

B.   Scoring of chest X-ray in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

C.   The etiology of pulmonary fibrosis

D.   Occupational lung diseases in glassmakers

E.   Asbestos in workers in a car manufacturing plant in Romania

F.   The rationale for retirement due to lung disease in IKA

G.   Occupational diseases for workers in the metal processing industry

H.   The etiology of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

I.    Induction of sarcoidosis in experimental animals by intratracheal bronchial leukemia injection from patients suffering from sarcoidosis (pulmonary sarcoidosis as well as localization of the disease in the skin and eyes).

He devoted himself with passion to the profession throughout his whole life; he wanted nothing more than to offer his services with sincerity and selflessness.
